This Halloween was one that I will remember for the rest of my life. Three of my best friends and I took a long weekend in New Orleans. Within minutes of my arrival, I knew I was meant to come to this city.

I arrived on Thursday afternoon, before my friends did (one arrived that night and the other two flew in on Friday). We were invited by my amazing aunt, photographer Josephine Sacabo, (check out her website here!) to stay with her at her gorgeous home in the French Quarter.

She and her husband Dalt welcomed me with the most open arms and hearts I have encountered in a long while. I haven't seen my aunt since I was about 6 years old-she's my mother's first cousin but hasn't lived in our home town for some time. When I met her and her husband this weekend, I felt like I was being re-united with old friends. True artists, they were inspiring just to be around.

Their home was out of a story-book. Filled with antiques, masks, odds and ends, it had me in awe all weekend. I'm sure something new caught my eye every time I walked in. My friends and I stayed on the third floor, equipped with its own study, two bedrooms, and a bath, this floor was a world all its own. A tiny green velvet chair, an old white top hat, and a gold demon mask were among the objects that I fell in love with on that floor. There were antique chests, a wardrobe filled with costume pieces, and paintings by Dalt that were taken from his book of fables (yes, he writes and illustrates fables, and they are amazing). And in the middle of the room my friends and I stayed in, a silver pitcher held a bouquet of sunset orange roses. It was so much to take in and so wonderful that I hardly wanted to leave the house.

One by one my friends all arrived, and Josephine and Dalt welcomed them as openly as they had welcomed me. Two of them live in California, so the four of us hadn't all been together in months. We laughed and caught up over the weekend, and it was wonderful. Saturday night we hit Bourbon Street dressed as Vamps, or vampire pin-ups, and we topped the night off with some absinthe from a bar in Pirate's alley. Sunday we went to Voodoo Fest and I finally got to see Jack White live as he performed with the Raconteurs. The show was unreal. I left with a new spring in my step, awakened by the kind of live music that stirs my soul.

Overall, this weekend inspired, relaxed, and enlivened me all at the same time. Surrounded by best friends, family, and art, I had a blast. I gotta get back to that place soon.

Fall Approaches

Fashion-wise, I've been in that transitional stage between summer and fall. Those last few days of sweltering heat as one awaits the cloudier, cooler time that's near. On my last trip to the Goodwill in Laredo, TX, I found an amazing red corduroy jumpsuit, an army green sweater maxi-dress, and a black velvet maxi dress, as well as a few other goodies. However, when I arrived home, I was saddened by the fact that I wouldn't be able to wear these treasures for quite some time. I'm now back in New York, where it's no cooler than it was in Texas a few days ago. Not sure what I'll wear today, but I'm almost positive it'll be black. Something that can keep me cool in this heat but still quietly and subtly calls for fall to arrive. I will post pictures of my Goodwill beauties soon. In the mean time, here are a few that are inspiring me right now.

My Mother As Martha

In the great state of Texas there is a tradition. It has been going on far longer than I've been around, that's for sure. It's called The George Washington's Birthday Celebration, and it takes place in my hometown--Laredo. For over 100 years, Laredoans have celebrated ol' George's birth with parties, parades, and a climactic debutante pageant (of which I was a part in 2007). For me though, this year is a little different. My mother, Betty Ann Bunn Moreno, will be portraying Martha Washington in the 2011 debutante ball, and I cannot wait to witness her experience in the months to come.

My mom is a beautiful woman, with the most generous heart I have ever come into contact with. When she laughs it's like watching a little girl laugh. Her nose is adorable, her blonde hair is voluminous, often in a Brigitte Bardot-style up-do, and her eyes glisten with a natural love of life. I am often told she is very much like her mother, who had the same generous heart and abundant love for others. Therefore it is only natural that my mother should continue the legacy of portraying Martha Washington, the way her mother did in 1968. Natural...and wonderful.

I was not able to see my mother the day she was officially elected as the coming year's Martha. I was doing a show here in New York that day. She called me and was crying tears of joy, and a bit of sadness that I couldn't be there. It was hard for me not to cry in response. I was, and still am, so incredibly happy for her. The thing is, no one deserves this like my mother does. I know she's always wanted it, and has postponed running for the position due to the fact that me and my brothers were a part of the pageant at different times, and she couldn't really concentrate on herself. Now that my younger brother is set to attend college in the fall though, there is no better time for her to take on the responsibility and honor that portraying Martha will be. She is so excited. She came to visit me this week to see a play I was in and I've never seen her look more gorgeous. She absolutely radiated joy. All she could talk about were all of the things she had to do, people she had to see, parties she was going to attend. It was so wonderful to see her so happy.

Portraying Martha Washington in the George Washington's Birthday Celebration in Laredo, Texas is a fete, an accomplishment. My mother, elected by her peers, will represent the community. In the coming months she will travel to Washington D.C. for a ceremony I'm still not completely clear on, she will speak at several functions in our home-town, and she will attend parties and luncheons and help organize charities. She will be an important piece of the whole shebang. But, most importantly, she will be herself, and smile, and laugh. She will make us all proud. Betty Ann is an amazing woman. Her love of life, gratitude, and generosity is contagious. This year, from her first honorary luncheon to the day she stands on stage, everyone will be lucky to get a chance to know that.

Highs and Lows that I'll Never Forget

In 2004, as a freshman at my Texas Catholic high school, I visited Ground Zero on a school field trip. When I arrived at the same site last Thursday morning, 6 years later, hazy memories of steel and large holes in the ground surfaced in my head. I didn’t know quite what to expect this time. What I definitely did not expect was the intense emotional ride that I was about to embark on.

My first feeling on that morning was that of sleep deprivation. I met my NYU journalism class at about 9:35 a.m. at the Tribute WTC Visitor Center on 120 Liberty St. I had only slept five hours.

It was about 30 minutes later that the next wave of emotion came. When we began an hour-long audio tour of the site ($10), sadness hit me like a wall. The audio tour consisted of 16 stories told by survivors, volunteers and others affected by 9/11.

When I heard the voice of Mary Lee, a survivor, re-telling the account of her 9-year-old son’s experience on that day, my eyes welled up with tears. Her son was waiting at school, watching as other children disappeared when their parents arrived to pick them up.

“He came around the corner and he saw my dad and when he saw my dad he said he knew that we were dead because we would’ve been there to pick him up,” said Lee. The 15 other stories were no easier to hear.

After our audio tour, we met John Henderson, a volunteer tour guide at the center and a Computer Systems Manager at NYU. The next feeling I experienced: admiration.

“I’m just a person who thought ‘I could do this,’” he said of being a docent at the center. As he led us through its galleries, each exhibiting different pieces of the tragedy that was 9/11, Henderson gracefully shared his knowledge with us.

He revealed to us the brutal statistics of that morning—2,749 killed (not including the terrorists), 22,000 human remains recovered, 40% still unidentified. They were like needles poking at my skin.

While listening to Henderson, I was overwhelmed by the over 1,200 photographs and pieces of memorabilia that lined the walls of Gallery 4. I couldn’t distinguish whether what I was feeling was awe or fear or some kind of a mixture of both. Whatever it was, I knew I would walk out of there a bit different. And I was right. Nothing about Ground Zero is hazy to me now.

The photo shoot I did yesterday went amazingly. The model did a beautiful job and my photographer and her assistant were fantastic as well. I owe them all big time. Such a perfect product. Look for my upcoming project in the months to come! I can't release the photos just yet. ;-)

Put the Past on Display-No Matter Who's Offended

"Please be advised--sexually explicit images." A small black-and-white sign warns viewers of what they are about to see. This does not explain the half of it.

The sign is hung at the entrance of "Downtown Pix: Mining the Fales Archives 1961-1991," an exhibit at the Grey Art Gallery, NYU's fine arts museum. It includes over 300 pieces ranging from photographs of men in drag to videos of people in bathing suits playing with poultry. Taken out of their archival context in the Fales Library, these pieces make for a memorable collection.

On Thursday, March 25, a day before the exhibit's closing, Marvin Taylor, director of the Fales Library, spoke to a class of NYU journalism students about the experience of chronicling and displaying the nation's leading collection of Downtown New York art of the '70s and '80s.

"Downtown art is not for a weak stomach," said Taylor, a bearded man with pierced ears and a pair of aviators perched on his head.

The Downtown Collection that Taylor has preserved includes a huge assortment of photographs featuring masturbation, dead bodies and homo-erotica.

Taylor, 48, first became interested in the Manhattan’s Downtown scene while he was a Quaker teenager growing up in tiny Cottage Gove, IN (population: 109). He said that he was always naturally rebellious – a quality that might prove helpful in protecting the nation’s foremost collection of equally rebellious art.

Despite its controversial content, Taylor deems the creations that emerged from this era essential to the future of downtown art. "If it doesn't offend someone, it's not doing its job," he said with a smile.

However, not everyone shared his beliefs. At the time it was created, the work was looked down on by some. "It was devalued as a bunch of punk rock kids making things that wouldn't sell," Taylor said. A gay punk himself, Taylor was aware of what was happening during that era.

Years later, he began collecting the memorabilia and art work that embodied that genre. On deciding what to collect for his archives Taylor said, "I knew about what had happened in New York in the 70s and 80s and I thought...'Well, duh.'" The 15-year-old collection now includes works by such artistic visionaries as Robert Mapplethorpe, Jimmy De Sana and Andy Warhol.

Although art-seekers were advised by a black and white sign that "explicit images" lay ahead, this did not stop the students trailing in and out of the museum from experiencing this exhibit.

Making Perfume out of Rain

One of my favorite childhood memories takes place at a quaint bed and breakfast somewhere in East Texas. I've been reminded of it several times recently, and now that I take a closer look, I find myself learning a new lesson from the six-year-old Scarlet.

Shadowy images, specific smells, and a plastic cup are pieces of what make up the memory of the night I decided to make perfume out of rain. My family was on a short vacation for a reason I cannot remember. It was a Texan spring evening. It began to rain, a slow drizzle. Perhaps out of childish wonder, or boredom, or a desire to smell like my mother, I decided that I would make myself some perfume. I knew what rain smelled like, and I loved it. So I put a plastic cup on the lawn of the lovely little house we were staying at in order to collect some. My logic was simple: in the morning I would crush some flowers I had found in the yard and put them in the rain water. I would then have the most beautiful-smelling perfume in the world.

In the morning, I did what I had set out to do the night before. I took my flowers (not noticing that they were now a bit wilted) and put them in the cup of rainwater. I crushed them with my stubby fingers, reasoning that they would release their smell into the water. After doing so, I knew that I held in my small hands a cup of the loveliest thing I had ever smelled, and that I had created it.

I don't remember whether I told my mother of my endeavor or what the perfume actually smelled like (probably plastic and grass). I only know that at that moment, I took some out of its cup and placed it on my wrist and neck, and for the rest of the day I knew that I smelled like a princess of the wild, like a fairy or like Thumbalina.

I knew what I was doing when I was six. I knew what I wanted and what I was creating, and I had faith that it would work out, that it was beautiful. I want to incorporate that into my artistic life now. I want faith that I am making something that smells beautiful. I want to feel like that princess of the wild. I think I'll go out next time it rains, collect some drops of water in a jar or plastic cup, and put crushed flowers in it. Then I'll douse my wrists and neck and lay on my floor and know that it is right.
